Music musings - Fat Freddy's Drop

Very occasionally I'll add a music related post on the website/blog if something really grabs me & I reckon is worth sharing - this is a site devoted to the photography of classic vespas after all I guess...!

One such band is Maori/Samoan/New Zealander 7-piece, Fat Freddy's Drop, hailing from New Zealand's capital, Wellington on North Island. NZ followers of this blog will no doubt know Fat Freddy's Drop very well but I've come late to their music, since listening to it for the last couple of years. They gradually got together in the late '90s & have gone on to become one of New Zealand's most successful bands. Their first album, 'Based on a True Story' remained at the top of their native sales chart for over two years! A pretty amazing achievement for an independently distributed outfit which they remain today, distributed on the Drop label.

Most bands dislike being pigeon-holed but Fat Freddy's Drop sound is probably best described as a combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, R&B, techno with a dose of house thrown in for good measure. 'Dr. Boondigga & the Big BW' is their second album with their third studio album 'Blackbird' due out next year, sometime in 2013.

Originally a 'jam band', Fat Freddy's Drop are known for their improvised live shows, songs on the albums are revised versions of compositions that have been played over many years performing live.

Below is a link from YouTube of 'Wandering Eye' from their first album, 'Based on a True Story'...
